Photo credit: UN Trade and Development/Henrique Pacini The 03 of March 2025, at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, the 5th United Nations Ocean Forum brings together global leaders, experts, and stakeholders to address trade-related aspects of Sustainable Development Goal 14. Over three days, discussions focus on aligning trade and economic policies with ocean sustainability, recognizing the vital role of the ocean in sustaining biodiversity, regulating the climate, and supporting food security, jobs, and global trade. As climate change, overfishing, and pollution threaten marine ecosystems and millions of livelihoods, the forum seeks to foster solutions for the sustainable use of marine resources. Bilateral meeting between the UN Trade and Development Secretary-General and the Constitutional President of the Republic of Peru. The ocean covers 70% of Earth’s surface and carries over 80% of global trade. It supports biodiversity, regulates the climate and underpins food security, jobs and economic growth. In 2023, the ocean economy hit a record $2.2 trillion. But climate change, overfishing, pollution and underinvestment threaten our ocean, its resources and the livelihoods of over 600 million people who depend on fisheries. At the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference, we will build on momentum from the 5th UN Ocean Forum held earlier this year, which delivered 15 action points and underscored trade’s vital role in shaping a sustainable and inclusive ocean economy.
