World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS)+20 High-Level Event 2025
8 July 2025 at Palexpo in Geneva, Switzerland.– Pedro Manuel Moreno, Deputy Secretary-General of UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), was a key speaker at the opening ceremony of the 20th anniversary of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), held at Palexpo, Geneva, marking the lead-up to the in 2025. Since its founding in 2005, WSIS has worked to build a people-centered, inclusive, and development-oriented information society, harnessing digital technologies to advance sustainable development. In his remarks, Mr. Moreno highlighted the summit’s achievements over the past two decades, as well as the urgent need to address today’s digital divides, ensure equitable access to technology, and promote ethical, sustainable digital transformation. The event continues discussions launched at the 18th Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Kyoto, Japan—another key outcome of WSIS. UNCTAD’s eWeek brings together governments, the private sector, civil society, and international organizations to shape digital policies for inclusive growth. Looking ahead, WSIS will focus on bridging technological gaps, promoting digital education, supporting innovation, and ensuring that the digital revolution uplifts everyone while also safeguarding human rights and the environment.
