On 10 February 2025 UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan, launched the Economic Development in Africa Report 2024 in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, where she highlighted key findings on strengthening African economies’ resilience to global trade risks. Cascading crises, including COVID-19 and the war in Ukraine, have hit the continent hard, exposing vulnerabilities linked to foreign market reliance, volatile commodity exports, high debt, and weak infrastructure. The report introduces a new framework analyzing risks across economic, governance, connectivity, social, energy, and climate dimensions. It stresses the need for economic diversification, stronger intra-African trade, strategic infrastructure investments, and innovative financial tools to build resilience.
