ASG Launches UN Trade and Development Report on Value Addition and Diversification in Madagascar
On 5 June 2026 in Madagascar, UN Trade and Development's Acting Secretary-General participated in the launch of the report “Rapid Assessment of Value Addition and Diversification within and beyond the Critical Energy Transition Minerals Value Chain: Madagascar.” The report highlights opportunities for Madagascar to increase value addition in critical energy transition minerals, including nickel, cobalt, graphite and ilmenite, while diversifying its economy beyond the mining sector. It identifies 259 potential products across 23 sectors, including opportunities in plastics, chemicals, apparel and textiles, machinery and food processing, with an estimated export potential of $1.1 billion. The findings underscore the importance of strengthening Madagascar’s broader industrial base to support sustainable and inclusive economic transformation. Photo credit: Novo-Comm
