In Hangzhou, artificial intelligence is already at work in unexpected places: making silk production more sustainable, running finance and management, powering robotics.
One idea ran through the day: technology only serves people if they can reach it. That depends on how closely research and industry work together — which is why he also visited the Future Science and Technology City and met Professor Ren Shaobo, Chairman of the Zhejiang University Council. Both want stronger collaboration on the research that development depends on.

Where those projects land decides which countries build the industries of the future.
"Strategic sovereignty is built through investment — the right investment, in the right sectors, on the right terms," said Pedro Manuel Moreno, Acting Secretary-General of UN Trade and Development, opening the second Future Investment Conference in Xiamen, China.
"The more of those decisions that are taken with developing countries in the room, the better the chances that the industries of the future are built there."
The conversation continues at the World Investment Forum in Doha this October.
